For those of you who may not know this, "Mountainman" is the male half of MNR's "simulcast show" that analyzes each race every night MNR runs. His name is Mark Paterson. From what I have gathered from the chatter on that show, he has pretty much been joined at the hip with this track going back to his childhood. His brother, currently, is also a jockey agent there. I also understand that the female half of this duo used to be a trainer at MNR, so these two people have their fingers on the pulse of that track, as well as being knowledgeable of the game itself. Something that he did not mention in his post, but which he has mentioned several times on the show, is that there is no funds available for "state bred" races until later on in the year. If he mentioned the reason(s) for this, I missed it, but this is just another reason for the limited fields. Owners/trainers with West Virginia bred stock have no incentive to race there. Another point to take away from this post, because it is important to you as a handicapper, is the following. I once asked someone if they thought every horse entered in a race was in the race trying to win. Their answer came back "yes", but that was the wrong answer. The answer is "NO". Many times horses are in a race to "fill" the race. In other words, just to make the race "GO". MOUNTAINMAN is addressing this point in his post. He used to be the guy who "hustled" entries, meaning going to trainers and asking them to enter their horse in a particular race whether or not the horse was "ready to go" or qualified for the conditions of the race. This goes on at EVERY TRACK, not just at MNR. In many cases it becomes an "I'll scratch your back if you'll scratch mine" type of deal. A trainer who complies with the request generally does so in return for a favor. That favor will be some other race he needs for a horse in his barn. So the deal is made. He enters his horse, the racing secretary writes the race he is looking for and the process continues. This is the reason it is important for you, the handicapper, to know which horses are the "real" contenders in a race, not just horses that are "filling" the race so it goes.

Thxs for sharing FTL ..
A State Bred race can add up to an 20% bonus if he wins.... a big incentive to stay home I know that NY can have 2 -3 races for SB's each card mike
