True Financial Security
With all the bad news in our economy today,we have to depend more on
our horse handicapping and betting skills.Financial security is not having money in the bank or a retirement account.True financial security is having that confidence that no matter what happens, you will prevail. That money or nest egg can be lost or confiscated by the government, but as long as there is a racetrack you know that you can come back from any setbacks. We have all the tools at our disposal to make money in horse racing. So even though there's doom and gloom in the economy,we know in our heart of hearts,we will win!!! well said
I remember in one of the Follow Ups Doc talked about this very topic. Wish I knew which one. Probably in the 70s or early 80s volume numbers.

The above mentioned article is a great read and it really hits home for me. Im guilty from time to time of treating handicapping as a "game" and as we all know you "play games". This line of thinking will and has affected my R.O.I. and I know better . Here's a quote from the article.

Every morning before i go to the sportsbook,i tell myself about twenty times,
"i am a winner...i am a winner"...That was the ultimate message of the Doc to all of us,"believe that you will win".Because even if we say that we want to win,but deep within we don't believe that we will, what we have done is give an instruction to our subconscious,"find me a way not to win"...and it will. We all aspire to the same goals but from I've seen, been told and read 96 - 98% fail to make the cut. If you are in that top 2 - 4%, I give you lots of credit for being a hard and dedicated worker. I've also read and been told that the hours spent getting to that point and maintaining a status quo are excessive and some say you might be better off working a day job that would pay a higher hourly wage. It's one thing to believe and another thing to do. Most of us don't have the rigid discipline it takes. If this was an easy task then everyone would be doing it. Whatever floats you're boat. I think depending on the race track for profits is a slippery slope at best unless you personally have a substantial track record of being able to do so.
For me personally, I was a winner the last 2 years but in no way do I think that somehow translates to a dependable income if the economy tanks. Of course, I am not a full time player nor do I aspire to be at this point in my life. Perhaps the years losing prior to winning the last couple have jaded my opinion some. In addition, I agree that a positive mental attitude is helpful, especially when you experience losses that you attribute to things out of your control. However, thinking you will win, and actually winning over a long period of time are entirely different. Jim |

This is one tough game. Experience has taught me that you need to be able to REMAIN CONFIDENT even when things are not going your way and bet as if
they were. Of course, to get that confidence, you need to have things not go your way, not bet with confidence, start feeling as if you can't do it, start seriously doubting yourself, and then marvel at how easily things can turn around as you recover your losses and forge ahead with even more profits. Who's better than you, when the double digit winners come pouring in, after a bad streak? The problem, however, is that you apparently need to revisit this cycle continually, as, it seems that no level of success can breed the kind of confidence necessary to stand tall when things are going badly. And things will/do go badly in racing. Even the best hitters have slumps and the accompanying loss of confidence that comes with them. Even Tiger presses when his swing is off or he gets bad breaks. So, even if you get to be a winning player, you get to the level where your skill is such that you CAN'T LOSE by any RATIONAL interpretation, the psychological baggage of tough beats and/or bad streaks will always be around. Nice way to make a living. Then again, there's a certain vibrancy to contantly testing yourself in a venue where few are successful. |

Coming from someone such as yourself, who I like, respect and know for a fact, is one of the better players on the board. Jim, Very well put. Your opinion is very much valued by many. There's nothing wrong with being positive but you have to be real as well. Now it's time for me to board the good ship lollypop and sail off into La La land. |

So much
I feel that just saying I'm going to win is cool
But I think that the true thing that Doc wants is that we overcome the fear of a loss The thinking in some of our heads that says This is wrong I can't really win because all horse players lose I fight many battles in my private life With out friends and family I could not do well at all trying to bet races Until I can get much better at thinking in the child and little professor I am not ready Sitting in the cone of silence at the library the other day I slammed my hand on the table after checking a race that I had just bet The anger I showed made me take a little break Why was I so angry! I need to work on my ability to accept losses Yes.... But I need to be able to a know that overall my ability and the methodology will get me to that place Thats my goal to win just enough to make extra money and get that winning feeling to carry me out of a troubled mind Thanks Bill |
