Thank you!!!!!
My Family and I would Like To thank ALL OF YOU for all for your kind words regarding my Grandfather.
This all seems so sureal to me. I guess in many ways I never viewed my Grandfather as mortal, with a time line. I never thought I would ever live a day with out him in the Physical Form. As much as I hung out at the old Office and attented Seminars around the country, I never really got it. I never learned to read a racing form. I still Dont know what a pace line is. I would Go to the races because I loved the pretty horses. I thought at one time I wanted to be a jockey because I loved to ride. When I reached 5'2 I realized I was too tall. My Grandfather was, and will always be my hero. I fawned over him, Loved hanging out with him, Loved going to dinners with the "Gang". I knew he was a teacher, and a Mentor. That was evident at every packed seminar, and class in that tiny Beaumont Ca. Office. People would always ask me if I knew how great a man he was? I would think Yeah I know. As a teenager how could I have guessed. I did not fully understand until right now. My grandfather was not just MY hero. He is a legand. As I read some of these Posts, I am absoulutly awestruck. My Grandfathers impact went far beyond a yellow manual and a dry erase board. it brings such joy to my heart to know that He helped change lives, and touched the hearts of so many. I am truly blessed to have spent 34 years with that man. To have been there in his Hayday, and on his last day. He was a class act. He could be all dressed up for a swanky Vegas night out, Or in his smoking jacket and mismatched slippers eating popsicals in bed. He was the one who Pushed me to succeed, The strong disiplinarian. There was no such thing Is "I cant" or " I give Up". He was also a Push over, and a big softy. when I recently brought home the 11th stray dog ( 6 at my grandparents... 5 with me) he shouted "NO MORE DOGS"!!!! I don't think I have to tell you who the dog ended up cuddled up to at night. He is the man that taught me everything I know about Frank Sinatra, Count Basie , and Glen Gould. He is also the man who would sit and watch bad Madonna impersanations with me on American Idol. He is , and will always be the most important man in my life. He held strong to his convictions, and left this earth with Dignity, Love and kindness in his heart, and peace in his soul. It brings such joy to my heart to know that He helped change lives, and touched the hearts of so many. I am sure he is looking down, and he is so proud. He lives on... Because of all of you. Thank You Thank You Thank You, Mariana "Pilar" Sartin PS... I am Very Sure That My Grandpa and Jimmy Are placing Bets in that OTB in The Sky... I am so sad to hear that doc passed to a better place. He certainly changed my life for the better some 27 years ago. I will always do my best to honor his memory and the sartin methodology.

As I know Howard has not been in the best of health, I have been dreading this day for some time. In my mind his passing signifies an end to an era.
I was fortune enough to meet Howard Sartin when I was transferred from Pensacola FL to El Toro CA back in the early 90’s. I had read the books and wanting to learn more, so I took a trip up to Beaumont one weekend to check Pirco out. I walked into their office right off the street and was greeted by Mary. I explained that I was interested in the methodology and wondered if Doc was there so I could meet him. He came out of his office shook my hand as we exchanged greeting. He then gave me a personal tour of Pirco talking about new developments in the Sartin Methodology and invited me to a seminar in Beaumont that was coming up later that month. As I got to know Doc and Mary that day, it came out that I flew Helicopters for the Marine Corps. My occupation became an ongoing light hearted point / counters point discussion between Mary that resurfaced every time I visited Beaumont and I; who felt I should trade my Helo in and spend the money on education. In vain I tried to get her to enlist. I did attend the seminar and did join the methodology. I purchased a copy of Synergetic Match-Up II – Doc gave me a copy of Entropy and refused to sell me Thoromation at that time. Over the years I did participate in several Beaumont seminars and a few workshops and seminars in Vegas, and Viejo Casino near San Diego. On several occasion I was fortune enough to be present when he would entertain with a piano that might be handy. My fondest memories of Howard were the workshop that took place at the State-line casinos previously mentioned by DJ of SD. We had a hell of a day and ate well that night. It was as good as I had read about in the Follow Up. Doc was a man of obvious intelligence but was never condescending. For those who have never meant him, just looking at his picture could give the impression that he was a sullen and overly serious in nature. But in all my personal recollections of Howard, he was always smiling and joking, more of a handicapping version of Mark Twain. He had an ability to connect with people and bring the best out of him. In my opinion, Doc is an Icon in the handicapping world whose methodology inspired many to become winners for the first time in their lives. While the Sartin Methodology flourish and changed on its own through the years, it also gave birth to other approaches in handicapping that owe at least in part some measure of credit to Howard Sartin. On a more personal level, I’m thankful to Howard for providing a forum for horseplayers to come together. Perhaps for me, the most rewarding aspects of the Sartin Methodology were the friends I made and the association formed. I am fortunate to count Doc as one of them. Visiting friends that live in Beaumont this past summer, I could not help but feel a deep sense nostalgia as I drove down 6th street past the restaurant just off the 10 were the seminars were held and then by the old Pirco office, reminiscing about the good old days. To his family and close friends I offer my condolences – my flag is at half-mast in tribute to “Doc”. |

As I had promised a few days ago, today I donated 10 percent of my profits from my winnings last Sunday to the American Heart Association in the spirit of Howard's desire that we "tide" to others our good fortune but also our knowledge.

I read your comments about your grandfather with a tear in my eye. He was almost mystical to me while alive. His background in country music composition, being a relative of the great writer, O. Henry, his understanding of the human condition, and his innovative approach to handicapping were just a few of his interesting facets. He truly was a man for all seasons. I'm sure that you, Mary, Shane, and the rest of his extended family will miss him. God rest his soul in peace. Al Borgerding |
