anti spyware stuff you should know

Greetings all, well this has noth to do with horse racing but I was reading Bills post to Jeff about the site getting some "undeserables" trying to sell thier errr wares via hyper links and all so I thought this cant hurt. These days virus arnt much of an issue anymore, however Spyware is!! I work parttime for a person here who builds and repairs machines and I take on all putors that are slow etc. The reason? you guessed it spyware. We have tested over the years dam near every anti spyware program around and concluded that you need 3 of them to really be covered on your machine. Dont fret they are all free! The reason 3 instead of just one is that one program will catch stuff that the others dont.

here they are just do a google search, they are all free and easy to install and run, just dont be lazy and run the help files on them, its well worth the effort:

Spybot search and destroy
Adware SE personal (make sure its the free version not the free 30 day free trail one ok?)
Grisoft free anti-spyware ( this is new and we are in love with it, it kicks the hell outa that nasty spyware and we have found it to be the bestwe have seen so far)
One last note, dont bother with free firewalls they are more of a pain in butt than they are worth, and not very effective, (we know we test all this stuff) windows firewall is ok and at least as good as the others.

If you dont have any of this and you are using dsl or cable you are opening your machine up to the world!! If you have any questions feel free to email me, Stay secure!!! Doug

Thanks for the suggestion. Already have Spyboot, added Adware SE and it's up and running. First scan found some interesting gremlins. Had trouble with the set-up for the Grisoft product, probably because I'm tired. Will give it another try tomorrow. Again, thanks.

A really good site to get you up to speed is http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ This site has information and tutorials on many of the Anti-Spyware programs.

The problem with Microsoft Internet Explorer is the use of Active-X controls which many of the Spyware programmers use to install their Spyware. I have used Firefox an an alternative browser since it does not use Active-X controls. This is not to say that Firefox is immune to Spyware, but it seems Internet Explorer is more of a target since most people use this browser.

One program you should check out is Spywareblaster by JAVACOOL. This program does not detect or remove Spyware, so you may ask what good is it?
What this program does is prevent Spyware from being installed on your computer in the first place. Assume you have a clean scan using ADAWARE for example. Spywareblaster has a definition file that you download periodically just as Adaware. The definition file has listings of known browser hijackers, spyware, and harmful cookies. What this program does is set a "kill bit" in your registry which prevents these programs from being installed. The tutorial on bleepingcomputer goes in more detail.

This is important as anyone who has had Spyware loaded on their computer knows that in certain cases removal can be very difficult.

Hi hound yes Active-X has always had its woes, Microhack) latest internet explor browser has a number of features that help, As far as cleaning out the registry goes later Ill post a goodie that can help even the novice do it. In that post I did orginally with the freebes I was thinking that since this is what we do here and now some of the jerks trying to sell thier wares here it might help, Have a great weekend, we are getting slammed on sat with the snow here.
