Grouping by Running Styles

There's a simple way in RDSS to group horses by running styles using the "Win" and "ITM" checkboxes. For example, Earlies and Early/Pressers could be checked as "Win" contenders; Pressers checked as "ITM" contenders; and Sustained/Closers as neither, i.e. both checkboxes are unchecked. Of course you can group them anyway you want but that's what works best for me.

After going through the field of yesterday's Alabama and checking the appropriate boxes, here's the result:

After you've done your "by groups" analysis, you can go back through the field and reset the check marks. As far as the group headers, I ignore them. Yes, you can change them to read "Early," "Presser," etc., but that requires changing a configuration file, which makes something simple more complicated. (And handicapping is complicated enough.)

Good idea on the surface, but their INTERACTION is ultimately what you are looking at.

Who suggests (by their pace lines choice) should go to the front? Will the pressers today PUSH that group faster than it is comfortable to go?

A MISTAKE I think most make on the closers: AT THE PACE PROJECTED BY TODAY'S PACE (not particularly by the pace of race that line came from unless it is close to the one suggest that will evolve TODAY, most do not check this and horses from SLOW early pace have much more energy left to close with) what is that closer able to do.

Closers run short all the time for many reasons, the most common of which is bad timing, however, LATE in the exertion, when their is INCREASING oxygen debt accumulating, they have to overcome TWO units of energy for each one lost at the second call and that is asking A LOT unless they are really dominant,
