Too much focal attention on single entrants
I have reviewed hundreds upon hundreds of photo finish results and they have only confirmed a long held belief that once the TRUE contenders are isolated, the rest of the race (from gate to wire) is subject to random effects that we do NOT have a bit of control over.
Also viewing so many successful players over the years, they COVER races as groups of contenders rather than isolating single horse winners. A simple way to cover exotics is the "Riding the Coat tails" angle. Find TWO contenders that should hit the board, key them both separately in exotic tickets to many of the lesser (usually the front end types) contenders. Key them in all three spots in a tri for example. ONLY if the odds suggest that is worth the wager. IF the top contenders are 8/5, 3/2, 4/1 and 9/2 I might pass.
