Here is a good example of "Situation #1" in Bill V's contest thread for 7.15.12, Mountaineer - Race 7. In this example, Bill V lost almost nothing by betting to place. A fortunate event for Bill V.

FTL again beautiful work. I am win only and upside and downside I could never bet 2 horses, but should I lose my win bet, "Next", I would do it all again.
